What your quote should list
- Carpet and pad, named by product and fiber
- Tear out and haul away of the old carpet and pad
- Furniture moving, in and out
- Stairs, priced separately or as a flat fee
- Transitions, trim and tack strip
- Power stretching, stated in writing
Fiber Is the Biggest Choice
Polyester is the cheapest fiber and wears out the fastest. Nylon and triexta cost more and hold up far better to kids, pets and busy hallways.
Buying polyester to save money often costs more over time, because you replace it sooner. For a guest room that barely gets walked on, it can be fine. For the family room, it usually isn't.
Pad Matters More Than People Think
Pad decides how the carpet feels and how long it lasts. Common choices include a six pound pad, an eight pound pad with a moisture barrier, and eight pound memory foam with a moisture barrier.
On a slab, a pad with a moisture barrier is worth asking about. It keeps spills from soaking through to the concrete and helps keep odor out of the pad.
The Tool That Prevents Ripples
Carpet has to be stretched tight. A power stretcher pulls it evenly across the whole room. A knee kicker alone can't, and carpet installed that way tends to buckle and ripple within a few years.
Ask the installer directly: do you power stretch every room? A yes, in writing, is a good sign.
Seams and Layout
Carpet comes in rolls of a set width, so bigger rooms need seams. A good installer plans them away from doorways and the main walking path, and runs the pile the same direction in every piece so the color looks even.
What Fully Installed Should Mean
Carpet prices look simple and often aren't. A real installed price covers the carpet, the pad, labor, removing the old carpet, moving furniture, stairs, trim and cleanup.
A quote that drops some of those to look cheaper is the most common pricing trick in carpet. The list on this page is what to look for. Then compare it with carpet installation cost ranges.
When It Goes In
In a remodel, carpet is the last finish, after painting and every other trade is done. If carpet is going on stairs above a hard floor, the hard floor and stair nosing usually go first.
Thinking about stairs? Read stair flooring installation.
Carpet in a Florida House
Humidity and carpet are fine together as long as the house is kept cool and dry. Near the beach, sand works its way deep into the pile, so weekly vacuuming and good door mats do more than any spray.
Want hard floors in the living areas and carpet only in bedrooms? That mix is common. See the floor types we get quoted.
